La Catalina Foundation
News, Reflections & Happenings…
Issue 7 – Fall 2007 La Manzanilla, Jalisco, México La Catalina Educational Foundation is happy to be continuing making a positive impact for the local people of La Manzanilla. Much of our efforts in 2007 and 2008 will be focused on running our current programs, consisting of English, dance and art, adult English classes, math and tutoring programs and other community service programs, and now with a strong focus on fundraising for our educational center construction project. Some recent exciting developments include: · Getting Daniel Ramirez his new laptop, thank to the generous donation of Rick and Brenda Finney. The foundation has help organized the purchase and is providing free training and technical support to Daniel on getting set up and giving him training and support in using his computer. · The foundation is excited to have just helped Guadalupe’s Bike Treks, a small locally run Mexican business, launch a bi-lingual website for their bike and bungalow rental business. Guadalupe and her sons all participated in the various stages of their website creation, involving writing the copy, assisting with the translation, and working with the design and technical aspects under the guidance of our intern, Dean Klompas. On the English class front, we finished off a successful year with our English programs in the schools and a 3-week summer school program at La Manzanilla Primary School for children entering grades 2 to 6. The summer program was initiated to offer a continuation of English and art opportunities during the children’s summer break. The program was a huge success, marked by all 20 spots we had available filling up, and by the kids refusing to go home at the end of the end of every day and asking on the last day of the program, “Can we please come back next week?” The foundation will be raising funds to run the program for 4 weeks next summer and have space for more children. Finally, if you are coming to La Manzanilla in the winter or know someone who is, please be sure to check our wish list this fall to help us gather program materials and supplies for the schools and foundation.
